In recent years, revenue development in the German accommodation industry showed steady growth, with the exception of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic lockdowns of 2020 and 2021. Currently there are around 48,200 open and running accommodation establishments in Germany, with roughly 487.2 million overnight stays recorded in 2023. The share of overnight stays completed by guests from abroad is highest in hotels. Large cities in particular profit from this development. In 2022, over ten million foreign guests spent the night in Berlin. In total, the accommodation establishments in the German capital counted around 26.5 million overnight stays that year. With around 190.7 million hotel overnight stays in 2023, it is is so far the most used type of accommodation in Germany.
As many other industries, while German accommodation is still recovering from pandemic travel restrictions, it is also contending with current challenges, such as rising energy costs and inflation. A source of competition in recent years are also short term home rental platforms such as Airbnb, since they provide a different kind of independence for travelers than traditional accommodation types.
