The sporting goods industry is a lucrative one in Germany. While gym memberships are definitely an option, plenty of people prefer their own schedule of physical activitiy, whether pursued outdoors or at home. The latter option and exercise independence in general were increasingly pursued during COVID-19 lockdowns, as sports facilities around the country were closed. But whichever method is chosen, the proper gear is necessary, which means shopping. Sporting goods retail sales revenue in Germany amounted to around 5.7 billion euros in 2021, an increase on the year before.
German sporting goods companies successfully compete on a global level. When looking at the revenue of leading sports brands worldwide, Adidas came in second after Nike. The brand’s online store was among the most profitable online sports stores in the country, based on e-commerce sales.
As far as recreational sports or exercise go, Germans mostly participate in a variety of activities. When looking at membership figures for various types of sports, fitness studios were the most popular choice, followed by soccer and gymnastics. Consumers are clearly eager to buy the right gear for their chosen pursuits. Revenue from sportswear sales in Germany only grew in recent years, amounting to around 4.49 billion euros in 2022. Forecasts predict further growth well into the 2020s.
